EC SUPPORTS THE ELECTION OF CPPD, BUT INDICATES THE NUMEROUS LOGISTICAL AND FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES THAT THE COMMISSION FACES

The European Commission in the Progress Report of the Republic of North Macedonia for 2021 supported the election of the Commission for Prevention and Protection from Discrimination and emphasized as a positive aspect, the fact that the Commission includes experienced professionals from the civil society sector.

They also point out that the CPPD has broad powers, including the right to initiate proceedings on its own initiative.

However, the European Commission also highlighted the numerous logistical and financial difficulties faced by the Commission in the first few months of its existence. They recommend that these challenges be addressed and resolved in order to ensure the full functionality of the CPPD.

The European Commission recommends that the country implement all the provisions of the Law on Prevention and Protection against Discrimination, in the following year. Also to provide the necessary resources for the full functioning of the Commission.

In its first quarterly report, the CPPD announced that the first months after its formation were marked by bureaucratic hurdles. Nevertheless, the Commission fulfilled all its legal competencies and started acting upon the complaints.
