The Commission for Prevention and Protection from Discrimination issued an opinion on committed direct discrimination against 7,000 citizens based on personal and social status by the State Election Commission (SEC) between the two election rounds during the 2019 Presidential elections.
SEC restricted the right to vote of these citizens in the second round due to expired ID cards, although they were eligible to enter the voter list and vote in the first round due to their valid ID cards.
Thus, SEC violated the principle of equal treatment in exercising the right to vote, which is guaranteed by the Constitution and the Electoral Code.
It is recommended to SEC, as the only competent body for keeping, updating and changing the data from the voter list, to prevent any possible unequal treatment and discrimination of the citizens who have qualified to be on the voter list.
